DESIGN & RESEARCH
I love to investigate important needs through creative, in-depth, respectful research, and to champion the voice of the user on collaborative teams seeking solutions to pressing problems. After 7+ years in the global development field, I shifted to focus my work in domestic and Boston-area communities. A selection of past projects is highlighted below.
Commonwealth and Hebrew Free Loan Society collaborated to understand the impacts of a debt refinancing offer on zero-interest loan borrowers’ financial wellbeing. I managed the project and partnership and designed the research plan.
In collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, I managed the first domestic user acceptability study of a patented infant medication delivery system to understand potential users’ behaviors, needs and design preferences.
As a UX Consultant, I conducted qualitative and quantitative research with museum and library professionals to inform the redesign of the Engage Families online resource, and later designed a new information architecture for the site.
I wrote and designed the D-Lab Scale-Ups User Research Framework, a 60-page, publicly available, extensive guide for planning, conducting and analyzing qualitative research in cross-cultural settings.
Through interviews and focus groups with smallholder farmers in eastern Zambia I gained an understanding of farming practices and related challenges, needs and aspirations.
I interviewed 10 members of this unique, community-focused co-working space, located between MIT and Harvard, to provide the management team with new insights into the member experience.
As part of the Technology and Social Change course at the MIT Media Lab, I worked with teammates to understand biker-driver-pedestrian interactions in Cambridge and prototype methods for improving these.
Interviews, focus groups and co-design sessions were utilized to understand challenges to procuring clean and safe water and to gain feedback on an existing technology attempting to address this need.
In Kenya, I worked on a redesign of the point-of-collection chlorine dispenser during the initial project scale-up stage, including prototyping, experimentation and field research.
